In 1905, French painters Henri Matisse and André Derain made history with their revolutionary color experiments. In the summer of that year, the two artists took a holiday in Collioure, a small fishing village in France near the Spanish border. This book explores how their experiences in the eastern Mediterranean, where they were captivated by the changing light and beautiful scenery, laid the foundation for the art movement known as Fauvism (from the French word fauve, which means "wild beast"). The book features over 70 paintings, watercolors, and drawings created by Matisse and Derain during their time in Collioure. It also includes 21 of their letters, translated into English for the first time, providing insight into their personal and artistic revelations.
The texts in the book vividly describe the artists' bold experiments with color, form, structure, and perspective, as well as the scandal that erupted when their paintings were exhibited a few months later. Despite criticism from art critics, these works ultimately reshaped the course of French painting. The publication underscores the lasting impact of that summer, showing how the artists' radical investigations inspired their peers and continue to influence modern art to this day.
The book is published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and distributed by Yale University Press. It is accompanied by an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from October 13, 2023, to January 21, 2024, and at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston from February 25 to May 27, 2024.
